In 2026, no support tool ships without an "AI" label on the box. The differences hide underneath: some AI actually answers your customers; some merely tags tickets and calls it intelligence. And the pricing models differ so much that two tools with identical features can differ five-fold in cost at your volume.
This guide compares five leading options and, more importantly, gives you the criteria to judge any of them.
Full disclosure: FirstReply is our product. The other four are strong products from serious companies; this comparison is about fit. Prices are approximate as of July 2026.
What separates useful AI from marketing AI
Ask these five questions about any "AI-powered" support tool:
- Is it grounded in your knowledge? An AI that answers from generic training data will confidently invent your refund policy. It must answer from your website, docs and help articles, and say so when it doesn't know.
- Does it draft complete answers, or just classify? Auto-tagging saves seconds. A sendable draft saves minutes, per ticket.
- Is a human in the loop when you want one? The right default for most small teams is review-then-send, with auto-send only for categories you've learned to trust.
- How does it handle languages? If AI answers only in English, it solves half your problem.
- How is it priced? Per resolution, per conversation, per agent add-on, or included flat? This determines whether success makes the tool cheaper or more expensive per ticket.
1. FirstReply, AI-native support for small businesses
FirstReply was built AI-first rather than adding AI to a legacy helpdesk. Incoming requests from all connected channels are categorized, prioritized and translated automatically, and the assistant drafts replies grounded in the knowledge you've imported, your website, documentation and help content.
- AI approach: knowledge-grounded reply drafting in the customer's language; staged automation from draft-only to auto-send per category
- Pricing model: AI included in every flat plan, from $39/month, no per-resolution or per-conversation fees
- Data stance: GDPR-compliant, EU-based company; your conversations are never used to train AI models
- Trade-off: focused on written channels; no voice AI or enterprise workflow engine
Best for: small teams that want maximum automated coverage at a fixed price.
2. Intercom Fin, the benchmark resolution bot
Fin is arguably the best-known AI support agent, and its resolution quality on chat is excellent. It answers from your help center content and hands off to humans gracefully.
- AI approach: autonomous resolution bot, strongest in the chat widget
- Pricing model: $0.99 per resolved conversation, on top of per-seat plans from around $29 to 39/seat
- Trade-off: usage-based pricing scales with your ticket volume; the platform is chat-first
Best for: SaaS companies with high chat volume and budget flexibility.
3. Zendesk AI, enterprise AI on the industry standard
Zendesk layers AI over its mature ticketing platform: intent detection, agent copilot suggestions, and automated responses tied into its workflow engine.
- AI approach: agent-assist and automation inside a full enterprise helpdesk
- Pricing model: paid add-on per agent on top of Suite plans (from around $55 per agent/month)
- Trade-off: total cost and configuration effort put it out of small-team territory
Best for: established support organizations already committed to Zendesk.
4. Freshworks Freddy AI, copilot for Freshdesk users
Freddy AI adds summarization, suggested replies and tone rewriting to Freshdesk, one of the most popular affordable helpdesks.
- AI approach: agent copilot (assist while a human writes) plus optional bot flows
- Pricing model: per-agent add-on on top of Freshdesk plans (which start around $15 to 18 per agent/month)
- Trade-off: copilot-style AI still requires an agent to touch every ticket; full automation is limited
Best for: existing Freshdesk teams that want AI assistance without switching tools.
5. Tidio Lyro, entry-level AI for small shops
Lyro is Tidio's AI agent aimed at small e-commerce businesses. It answers common questions from your FAQ content directly in the website chat.
- AI approach: FAQ-grounded chatbot with handoff to live chat
- Pricing model: priced by AI conversation volume on top of Tidio plans (free tier; paid from around $29/month)
- Trade-off: chat-only focus and simpler answers on complex, account-specific questions
Best for: small online stores taking their first step into AI support.

How to run a fair test
Don't evaluate AI support tools by their demos, demos are rehearsed. Instead:
- Collect 50 real tickets from your history, including the messy ones.
- Feed each tool your actual knowledge base: the same content for all candidates.
- Score the drafts: Would you send this as-is? With small edits? Never?
- Calculate the real monthly cost at your volume under each pricing model. Per-resolution fees look tiny until you multiply them by a busy month.
- Check the data policy: where is data processed, and is it used for model training? For EU businesses, GDPR compliance is non-negotiable.
The tools above are all capable. The right one is the one whose answers you'd actually send, at a price that doesn't punish you for answering customers quickly.
